Kayak Zak’s owner Marna Powell fishes for a duck and wins a Madaket cruise for two Friday night at Humboldt Baykeeper’s third annual Birthday Bash, a fundraiser for the Humboldt Bay group, at the Arcata Community Center. Four hundred guests showed their support as they enjoyed cocktails, dinner, a raffle, silent auction, a performance by students from the Humboldt State University West African drumming and dance class, and dancing to the West African Highlife Band. Hurricane Kate’s catered the sold-out dinner, serving New York steaks, pine nut-crusted halibut, African sweet potatoes and squash. Melvin McKinney was honored at the bash with this year’s Waterkeeper of the Year award.
